Parent Education - Maximize Success!

Learning to swim is a beautiful journey, but it is one that extends beyond the walls of our swim school. While our weekly lessons provide the expert foundation your child needs, what happens between classes is just as vital to their growth, safety, and confidence.

Why Home Practice Matters

Swim classes are typically scheduled 1 to 2 times per week (and occasionally 3). However, life happens! Between unpredictable weather, seasonal sickness, or just a hectic family schedule, cancellations are bound to occur.

When a session is missed, our swimmers can sometimes go a week or two without getting into the pool. This is where home practice becomes your secret weapon:

  • Accelerates Progress: Practicing at home dramatically increases your child's chances of faster success.
  • More Opportunities to Shine: Consistent exposure gives your swimmer extra moments to master skills and feel proud of their achievements.
  • Eases Anxiety: For our more anxious or nervous swimmers, practicing at home greatly helps the acclimation process—especially when you mirror the exact skills your instructor uses in class.

💡 Parent Tip: Don’t hesitate to ask our team questions! We love teaching parents the specific techniques and holds we use. Learning these methods gives you powerful tools to help your child feel entirely comfortable in any body of water.

Safety & Confidence First: What to Practice at Home vs. Keep in Class

To protect your child's safety and emotional well-being, we prefer to divide your practice into two categories:

  • Keep in Class: For safety and technical reasons, we prefer to keep milestones like our back float holds within the realm of swim class where instructors are formally trained to facilitate them. Additionally, we ask that you keep any aspects of underwater swimming in class if your child is currently anxious or nervous about going under.

  • Practice at Home: Focus your home practice on the parts of swim class where your child is already shining and feeling confident! Replicating the things they love and excel at builds an unstoppable foundation of positivity that will naturally carry over into their trickier skills.

🤔 Unsure where to start? If you have questions about exactly what is best to practice at home for your individual child, just ask your instructor! We are always happy to give you a personalized recommendation.

Our Professional Approach: Trusting the Process

When these confidence hurdles arise, you will often see our formally trained instructors "go back to basics."

We may temporarily regress a swimmer to simpler skills to ensure their foundation—like body position and breath control—is correct before moving forward. More importantly, going back to basics gives the swimmer and instructor the space to form a strong bond, helping your child find their path to success in a positive way without pushing them into a negative headspace.

What You Can Do To Help

  • Provide Space: Allow the instructor to communicate directly with your child, even if your child chooses not to answer back right away. Give the coach space to navigate behaviors or challenges—they will absolutely let you know if your assistance is needed! Taking a step back is crucial to allowing the instructor and swimmer to form that trust and connection.

  • Celebrate Small Wins: Be overwhelmingly positive and supportive. Celebrate every single achievement, no matter how small it might seem.

  • Record and Copy: Ask your coach about specific skills you can replicate safely at home. Feel free to video record the instructor performing a skill during class so you can watch it back later and copy their exact technique.

Navigating Common Confidence Hurdles

Swimming is as much a mental milestone as it is a physical one. It is completely normal for a swimmer’s confidence to fluctuate. Here are two very common scenarios we see, and how we can work together to navigate them:

The Sudden "Regression" (When Skill Outpaces Confidence)

Have you ever noticed your child doing incredibly well one week, and then all of a sudden they seem nervous, anxious, or completely shut down? For example, they might independently swim and float on Monday, but by Thursday they are terrified to try.

  • What's happening: This is entirely normal. Their physical skill level has progressed faster than their emotional confidence. They feel like they’ve moved too fast and suddenly doubt their own abilities.
  • The Home Remedy: Building that confidence back up takes time, making home practice even more essential to their success.
  • What to Avoid: We strongly advise against saying things like "But you did this last week!" or questioning why they can't do it anymore. They are likely thinking the exact same thing and feeling discouraged, which can cause them to shut down further.
  • What to Do Instead: Focus entirely on the "cans," the positives, and small confidence builders.

The "At-Home Rockstar" (Confident at Home, Nervous in Class)

On the other side of the coin, some swimmers are absolute rockstars in their backyard or community pool with family, but completely freeze up or regress during their formal swim class.

  • What's happening: This is also a confidence and environment hurdle. At home, they have an established bond of trust with you, and they are in "play mode" rather than "lesson mode." Shifting to a structured environment with a coach can be nerve-wracking.
  • The Remedy: This situation requires building a strong bond, trust, and connection between the swimmer and their instructor.
